I bet a battle badger this is going to be the longest downtime if not ever, then for a very long time. If we can log back in in a couple of days, I'd say we're lucky. At least one of my chars has a 7 day train time remaining... not my main though, he's out :(
Think I started training a 3 day skill on my alt. My main is inactive atm. It says they have been taken down as a precaution so heres hoping its only a day or 2 till they beef up their security.
While we have some time, could somebody explain roughly what kind of thing has happened here, but in really easy to grasp terms. I know it has been hacked but how, what kind of thing have they sat down and actually done.
Looks like CCP's login servers got DDoS'd. This means that multiple systems take up all of the targets bandwith/resources. This got a whole bunch of news in eve recently as some of the DRF coalition would ddos the NC's comms/websites to stop them from communicating. It happens quite frequently towards smaller sites (like richard simmons website was down for 2 days after he posted some inflammatory stuff) but it's a lot rarer to find it on such a big scale..
Edit: On a related note, it looks like none of CCP's servers were actually breached so it doesn't look like they're in Sony levels of trouble.
Its up :D
All the wives of the players got together and came up with a plan to get their husbands back for a day uglystoopid
lol bricks and thank you luv. So they essentially just tried to log in too many people onto the forums or something. How would this breach the security? I'm thinking in terms of pouring water down the sink, it still has to go through the plug so surely it just creates a back log? Or am I thinking in the wrong way.
If you take up all the available connections then nothing else can connect. That's a security risk as the company is losing money by not having their product up.
Sophisticated hackers can use a ddos attack as a diversion (the firewall gets lagged to shit so they can slip in) so that they can enter the system and steal information ect. This was more of an EPEEN thing i think because a bunch of nerds with nothing to do are pissed. So not really a security thing right now. (generally people who hack for a reason such as stealing info dont advertise that they were the ones who did it)
